- When You Feel More Anxious in the Morning
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I know I have a chronic anxiety problem, but I feel more anxious in
- the morning than I do the rest of the day. Can this really be?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: Yes, there appears to be a cyclic variation in how some people with
- anxiety or depression feel during the day. People with anxiety disorders
- alone are more likely to have more symptoms of their problem during the
- afternoon or evening than in the morning. The same pattern holds true for
- people with anxiety mixed with depression. On the other hand, people
- suffering from melancholia (depression marked by physical and mental apathy,
- brooding, lack of activity, and sad thoughts) usually have their most severe
- symptoms in the morning.
- There appears to be a cyclic nature to other mental illnesses, also, with
- the cycles ranging from daily to monthly or longer. Many people who suffer
- panic attacks say they are more likely to have them in the middle of the
- night. Women who have panic attacks are more likely to experience them just
- before their monthly period.
